The yearning for good food..

This is one problem that had me smitten ever since I got into the dreaded E-SLUM (read as BTM). With PG food creating havoc in my system and no other go than the ghee-dripping A2B (don’t ask me about my paunch now), I had to come up with an alternative solution. And that’s when I bought the electric cooker.

The initial days were passable, with paruppu podi, kariveppilai thokku and curd coming to aid. But as days passed by, I got more adventurous and started trying noodles, uppuma and slowly graduated to pulav. Since the culinary department was in my favor (noodles panna appadi enna theramai vendi kedakkunu sollaadheenga. Adhula sodhapinavanga kooda namma naaatula irukkaanga), I thought I will try out tomato rice and succeeded the first time. This is what my recipe is.

Tomato Rice: (serves 2)
1) Rice – Basmati or rather anything as long it is washed, drained and soaked properly. – 1 cup

2) 3 ripe tomatoes (Boil it in water, peel the skin and make it into a thick pulp).

3) 1 big onion

4) Masala (You can either add the ready made mix or get the more traditional cinnamon, cumin, cardamom and clove kinds).

5) ghee

6) ginger-garlic paste

7)3 slit green chillies

8) mint leaves (optional).

Method:

Heat ghee, add the masala powder and ginger-garlic paste. Fry for sometime and then add cut onions, green chillies and fry till golden brown. Add the tomato pulp too and keep mixing the ingredients till it becomes a homogenous (romba chemistry padichiten) mixture. Add a little red chilly powder and salt to taste. Mix everything properly. Add rice finally and 2 1/2 measures of water. Close the lid and wait till the cooker mode drops from ‘cooking’ to ‘keep warm’. You are all set to eat the delicious tomato rice.

Experience speaks:

Always add very little chilly powder and salt in the beginning. Its ok if spice is less.

First time seyyum podhu nalla thaan vandhudhu. PGla ellarum nalla irukkunu sonnaanga. Ore oru ponnu mattum konjam spice kamminnu solla, indha dhadavai romba kaaram pottuten. Appuram enna, en rooomie anandha kanneer vittu, neenga nalla irukkanumnu solli saapitaa 😉
