Tomato Chutney

This is not the usual tomato chutney that we have with our chapati. My mom makes this for idlis and its scores over the infamous getti chutney.

I tried it yesterday and it came out really well. Here is the recipe if you want to try it out. The whole thing will take around 10 minutes. 🙂

1) Red chillies ( 4 or 5)

2) Bengal gram dal (1 tablespoon)

3) a lil hing

4) few curry leaves

5) 1 big onion (cut)

6) 3 small tomatoes

7) salt to taste (1 tsp)

8) 1 tsp cooking oil

1) Heat the oil in the pan and roast red chillies and dal for 1/2 a minute. Add a lil hing to it.

2) Add curry leaves and cut onion. Roast till the onion turns golden.

3) Add the tomatoes

4) Saute it for another minute and remove from stove and cool for a bit. Add salt to the mixture now and grind it. Do not add water to the preparation. The water in the tomatoes is enough.

5) Your tomato chutney is ready. This dish is relished when it is grind a lil coarsely. 🙂 Let me know how it turned out.

  2. I think the tomatoes should be boiled for while till the raw smell of tomatoes goes away. Since i dont eat pices of tomatoes I may the alternative way. Grind the tomatoes and then allow it to boil with the thadka. Allow add a garlic in the tadka.. its nice!
