Adhi Mangala Kaaranane!!

Filed under: Poems — Celia Rexselin @ 11:53 am

How does it feel when you find out that you are actually a novice in a language in which you thought yourself as a expert?

I happened to listen to this traditional christian keerthanai… Mystic words.. in each and every word lies a thousand hidden meanings.. Asked the meaning to my mom. She herself didnt know the meaning to a few of the words. I have attempted to translate it. Lemme know if the translation is good.

Adhai Mangala Kaaranane
Thudhi thangiya pooranane
Narar vaazha vinn thurandhor
ezhayaai pirandha
vanmayee thaaranne

madhi mangina engalukkum
thidhi singinar thangalukkum
unin maatchiyum thiviya kaatchiyum
thondrida vayiyaai thungavane

kudi mannargal medayaiyum
migu unnadha veedathayum
neengi maatidaye pirandh aatidayar thozha
vandhanaiyo tharayil!!

theeya peythiral odutharkuum
umbar vaaythiral paadutharkum
unai pinparruvor thinam thunbarru vaaztharkum
perra nal kolamidhoo

— Translated Text

You are the one who creates happy endings
You are The one who lives in praises
You are the one who gave up heaven
and became poor
to make men live.
O mighty God!!

Please show yourself and your glory
to the confused and the lost ones!!

You gave up the most high place
and the king’s crown!!
Were you born in the midst of cows
to be worshipped by poor shepherds?

The evil has fled,
and men sing,
Were you born poor
to make men rich and happy?

  1. Thats a nice song… I don’t know what it means in the original language, but I know what you mean about finding out you’re not as great in your language as you thought!

I’m trying to re-learn and improve my hindi and urdu. I’ve been speaking, reading and writing english for way too long!

    God bless you πŸ™‚
    In Christ,

  5. Is there anyone who could help me in getting music notes for Keerthanai songs, similar to what we have for Pamalai?
