Love is a wonderful thing

August 7th is a special day in my life. This was the official day when I took the first communion when I was just 7 years old.. Every year, when this day comes, I think of that day, how happy I was and remember that song. Yeah, I will tell about the song too.. But I need to tell about a wonderful person who explained me the sacrament in few sentences.

For those of you who are not aware, every christian has to pass through 7 phases.. or sacraments. First, the baptism – becoming a part of the family, confession – happens when we are old enough to know between right and wrong and to repent for our sin.., first communion – when we accept Jesus into our heart as our personal friend, savior…

My parents decided that they make the event big and wanted to finish it in one go. My brother and myself were put into it. I was the youngest in the batch of sunday class. I was made to sit close to Victoria Miss, a old granny. I didn’t understand anything of what she said and wasn’t able to comprehend anything till that day.. All I knew was, that I also can take part in rituals as adults do.

The final day came. I was dressed in white frock with a white veil covering my mane. My miss gave me a candle that was decorated and lighted it. We all were made to stand up and praise God in unison. That is when we sang that song.

Love it was that made us
and it was love that saved us
Love was from God when he made man
Shall we partake of God’s love?

Born of God’s love, we must love him
That’s why he made us, to love him
But only when, we love all men
Shall we partake of God’s love.

Love is a wonderful thing
Joy in our heart it will bring
Where there is love there is God
and where there is God there is Love.

Love it was that made us…..

We sang few more songs and then finally took the sacrament. I was joyed that all my relatives, friends had come to participate and was awed to fully experience the glory..

My uncle had invited his gang of friends too. All of them, in their twenties, were macho men and were ready to help my parents in all the function work. One particular uncle took me for a ride and showered his love on me.. Then, I asked him.. “Raj uncle, what makes this day so special?“.. He replied, “Mole.. this day is very special in your life. Today is when you accept Christ as your best friend. From now on, you can speak to him, play with him and ask him anything.“. I shot back, “But if he gives me everything, what does he want back?“.. He replied, “Love.. All you would have to do is to love him, and you can love him by loving your fellow neighbours. Ok, let me give something to my dear, what is it that you want? Ask me anything and I will give it to you“.

I was so happy, so self satisfied at the explanation that when he asked me this, I didn’t know what to ask for.. I looked around.. found a icecream vendor standing outside my lazarus church and said.. “I want cone ice, Raj uncle“..
