Rang De Basanti

Filed under: Life as I know it — Celia @ 5:14 pm

When someone sees this, they’d first go and click on the close button of the browser. I know. Every other blog has now atleast one post boasting or commenting about Rang de basanti. But I promise, this is not going to be a review of how a british girl came to India and rekindled the passion of Indian youth..

This is the story of how an unsuspecting girl who wanted to see a hindi movie, was lured and deceived by a different story line.. Or perhaps, by Siddharth (mavanae, en kayile nee kedaicha!!!).

Ever since munna’s birthday, he was saying that he’d get us to watch this movie as his b’day treat. And we had to wait for a long time for its release. I, not a frequent movie watcher, was hesitant. But I heard that this is not just another masala flick and hence decided to try it. The day came, and we finally decided to go. We split ourselves into two groups and went to the theatre. Boy!! I haven’t seen such a crowd before in Ega.. And I have to admit saying that I have never been to this theatre also.. We waited for what it seemed half an hour and finally got to go in and sat down.

Here I have to tell you something.. My hindi understanding skills are very bad though I can make out frequently used dialogues.. And I also knew from some reviews that Madhavan will die in the movie. I was sitting between two of my friends and both claimed to know hindi very well. I told them that just in case, I have any doubt, they should explain it to me. They promised.. Boy!!Β  what a mistake that was..

The movie started, yeah.. and I saw the bhagat singh (siddharth) and all others in prison waiting to be hanged.. My friend came closer to me and whispered.. “That should be siddharth’s dad in the movie!!”. I echoed, “Oh! Yeah”.

And the movie started. I should say that it was damn good music.. the fun the youngsters shared.. I could relate it to all the fun we had and are having. But I was dreading the fact that madhavan would die of very soon..Β  Anyways, the movie was very interesting and I chose to ignore that fact..

Soon, interval came in. The guys asked us whether we wanted any snacks and went off. We three sat down and started discussing about whatever had happened till now… Appo, andha friend pottaa oru gundu..

Friend 1:Do you know that Siddarth would marry Sonia later in the movie?
Me:What? But Why?
Friend 2:!!! what were you watching till now?
Me:Hey!! I don’t get it. Just because Madhavan dies, Siddharth needn’t marry this girl..
Friend 1:Ok, fine. Do you remember siddharth taking a photo from his drawer?
Me:Yeah!! I do. That was his mother..
Friend 1:No, Thats Sonia. Siddharth is in love with Sonia..
Me:Hey, That can’t be.. I thought that it was his mother who died long back..
Friend 1:It doesn’t make sense at all… Seri, adhu vidu.. Why do you think, Siddharth gave all those affectionate glances at Sonia and Madhavan when that guy proposed to her?”
Me:Hmmmm.. I thought… he was acting fraternal…
Friend 2:Appadi podu.. ellarum thaane irundha.. vera yaaravadhu fraternallaa act panaaala?
Me:illaye..

And so, after the interval I started seeing the movie with a totally different perception.. And boy!! how many turns it took. When Madhavan died and Siddarth became emotional, I was thinking (dei, unna neeye kaati kudukaadha da.. konjam adakki vasssi). But the movie didn’t seem to proceed in the right direction itself.. I was expecting a Siddarth, Sonia duet followed by how they happily lived ever after..The movie ended.. and we three were still waiting to see whether there would be some more scenes…

Appa… naaanum neraya reviews padichitan.. Everyone seems to maarthatify how they need to be more patriotic at this hour.. but no one said whose photo it was!!!!

  2. Trust me, I tot so too. Siddarth was a bit different or indifferent (choose any word!) in certain scenes of Maddy and Soha, esp. after the proposal thingy and after Maddy’s death…. but defnly din want then to end up living happily ever after!!

And now i’m reminded of the picture that he pulls out! But y din the director let us know about that, needless to say that I almost forgot about that scene in the later part of the movie.

@DV- Yeah!! There were loose ends.. and we had our fun of our own coz of that. πŸ˜€

@Sujit- Yes, Sujit. But it was just those scenes alone. Otherwise, my friend did translate correctly πŸ™‚ (My friend just said that she saw my blog. πŸ˜‰ So konjam ice ice baby)

@Naren- LOL.. Yes, it was a totally different movie and had me engrossed till the end. Movies like these or even better should come out very often from bollywood factory.

@Sujit – Ha ha, am bad at that.. but try to do it sometimes to pacify!! work is fine.. Learning a lot!! AJAX!! hey, what technology are you into?

@andfolks!!! That picture is of Sid’s mother only!! Rethas had seen the film yesterday and confirmed it. So Sid, paavam da nee!! unna thappa purinchikittom!! However, this is a nice movie… and dunno whether its just a coincidence or by inspiration!! Today I saw in paper that a group of guys from IIT have started a political party.. Seems to be a good decision.. Lets wait n see.

  9. The guys in the movie are Selfish Guys! We have already had this discussion. Just to rekindle it…

    Comment by saturnring — March 5, 2006 @ 8:40 am | Reply

  10. Nah, they are not selfish.. They were practically human guys who were desperate to see some justice getting done.. And when it didn’t, they chose the most easiest way out!!!
adi udhavura maadhiri anna thambi udhava maataanga!!!
    enna naan solradhu?

As for the discussion, it can’t be applied to facts. It can be applied to only general notions or perceptions. And, what these guys felt and saw was a fact and they had to do something without sitting like dumbos.. and they did what a common man would do. It takes more than a common man, to forgive.
