Is your homepage immature?

Filed under: Developer's Notes — Celia Rexselin @ 5:47 pm

Found this interesting piece of information. Thought I would give a link to it here.

As I was reading the page, I was trying to correlate the information seen to my homepage. But there are some basic differences. I do not have a business site. Mine is a personal blog which I write as a hobby.

Yet, I think the logic can be applied to blogs as well. Primarily because, both are on the web and both have an audience. If the bloggers do not care about the audience who read their posts, then this post is not at all applicable to them. They can very well click on the X mark at the top right corner of the browser. Others, read on.

1) Is the site content oriented or template oriented? If the template is getting updated more than the posts, its time to stop blogging.

2) How much space does the content occupy on site? Are the pages devoted to blog rolls, banner ads and google ads? In that case, it is highly likely that one would not get any visitors as well. The content should gain priority over anything and should occupy the plum space.

3) Font size and the template color. This is very much a user preference and is different for each and every user. However, one should use fonts that are universally available on all computers and one that works with all browsers.

4) Dividing the homepage into sections really helps. One would know, where to look in for specifics and its easier.
One particular information was very useful to me.. That is, “Be concise and direct on the homepage so that the amount of content doesn’t overwhelm users”.

My posts are usually long and I have decided to make use of wordpress’s “more” feature extensively. That way, my friends won’t get overwhelmed by my content πŸ˜€

  2. good one. i exactly understand what you mean by content oriented Vs template oriented. guess i am one of the clear candidates for that one.:) But you see, it is not my fault!(blaming WP for coming out with such good themes)

  3. @Nanyaar, @saturnring- No offence meant πŸ™‚ Trying out new themes/templates is always welcome. But its lil boring to keep visiting the blog only to see a new template without any new posts..
