Do women ask for it?

Filed under: Life as I know it — Celia Rexselin @ 11:17 pm

This blog came up in a journal recently. BlankNoise Project. A woman is collecting clothes of those girls who are subjected to sexual harassment otherwise euphemistically known as eve teasing.

As I was going through the journal, I wondered whether what she does would make any difference to the male world.

Saying that “women ask for it by wearing skimpy clothes.” is like.. Women should be put back in their right places by teasing or raping them.

Is this what the male crowd means?

  1. Sheer atrocity
When we all believe that we are in another millenium, news as such throw us back into rock ages…..

  2. Yeah Harish!! I am glad that you voiced your view here. But I don’t believe in the fact that this happened only in the rock ages and not in this new 21 century.

Every girl is subjected to harassment in one form or another atleast once in her life. If we take this to be a fact, then this means there has to be atleast half the number of male crowd which does this.

Do we take this as teen age disorders on the part of the guys? No. I have heard that middle or older males indulge in this more.

The question is how we bring an end to this. Or should we start educating women to start wearing burqa? Would these incidents stop if women give away jeans?

  3. Where does “Skimpy Clothes” throw a message “Harrass me”. I guess this does not happen here in US. Am i not the one to decide to wear clothes that comforts me… i was partly irritated when Anna univ VC came up with the idea of uniforms and dress code rules…C’mon if a gal wear a jeans and a T-shirt and that calls for some guy to Harass her beat him to death or do something to stop him rather than to pick up the easy solution of preventing that gal from wearing wat she wanted to…

  4. Very true Bindhu
As u said…its the middle and old age men who seem to be more harmful than the youth of today
Perhaps its partly also because of womens fear of voicing out which boosts their pervert desires

  5. @Kay- Yeah Kay, Hope that this doesn’t happen in the West. Here, in India and in other eastern countries, the victims are mostly blamed. Most of the girls stay silent because of the fear of society and parents sake…

Moreover, the society is divided on issues like morals and influence of the west. Guess, we’ll have a long way to go before there’s some end to this.

@Harish: Yes. women don’t voice out mostly. Because they think that they would be more ashamed if they do so.

  7. That could be a trigger …but we live in a free world and every one has a right to wear any attire one chooses to..

on the otherside ..with so many ..sick people around ..precautions needs to be taken .one can contemplate and find out what went wrong here but for some one who has experienced such harrasment will not be in a stable sate of mind to recollect or to regroup !!
