Jimmy Please Say You’ll Wait For Me

Happened to land on a lyrics site today and I found a song that my friend taught me when I was in college. Back there in college, we didn’t have that much entertainment. No beach, amusement parks or mega malls. All we had were the cinema theatres, which were of no use to me.So my friends and myself had no other option but to go, get lost in the town during daytime and rediscover the path to college while returing.

During the nights, we would get our dinner from the mess, and would sit in the park and talk till midnight. We were a kinda masala gang, people from different customs and cultures. This way, we learnt a lot from each other and this includes songs too. (even gana songs).I like this song a lot, well, not because of the words, but because of the way my friend used to sing it.

Jimmy Please Say You’ll Wait For Me
I’ll Grow Up Some Day You’ll See
Saving All My Kisses Just For You
Signed With Love Forever True

Joni Was The Girl Who Lived Next Door
I’ve Known Her I Guess Ten Years Or More
Joni Wrote Me A Note One Day
And This Is What She Had To Say

Jimmy Please Say You’ll Wait For Me
I’ll Grow Up Some Day You’ll See
Saving All My Kisses Just For You
Signed With Love Forever True

Slowly I Read Her Note Once More
I Went Over To The House Next Door
Her Teardrops Fell Like Rain That Day
When I Told Her What I Had To Say

Joni Joni Please Don’t Cry
You’ll Forget Me Bye And Bye
You’re Just Fif-teen I’m Twenty Two
And Joni I Just Can’t Wait For You

Soon I Left Our Little Home Town
Got Me A Job And Tried To Settle Down
But These Words Just Kept Haunting My Memo-ry
The Words That Joni Said To Me

Jimmy Please Say You’ll Wait For Me
I’ll Grow Up Some Day You’ll See
Saving All My Kisses Just For You
Signed With Love Forever True

I Packed My Clothes And I Caught A Plane
Had To See Joni I Had To Explain
How My Heart Was Filled With Her Memo-ry
And Ask My Joni If She’ll Marry Me

I Ran All The Way To The House Next Door
Things Weren’t Like They Were Before
My Teardrops Fell Like Rain That Day
When I Heard What Joni Had To Say

Jimmy Jimmy Please Don’t Cry
You’ll Forget Me Bye And Bye
It’s Been Five Years Since You’ve Been Gone
Jimmy I Married Your Best Friend John

(well, the last two lines are not exactly the same as she sung it.
may be she forgot the lines, and made up her own. It used to end like
Its been five years since I saw you, Jimmy I Married your Best Friend Joe).

  13. It’s called Don’t Cry Joanie and it took me almost 25 years to find it. I’m glad I did, though. I remember it from when I was a kid. And thanks for telling me who the woman was. All I could remember was that it was Conway Twitty on the male vocals.

  18. My name is Joni, and I heard this song when I was 12 and I never heard it again. I am now 41. How come they don’t play this song anymore? I liked it. What is so ironic about it, is that my first love’s name was Jimmy. I loved him soooo much. We were both so much in love, we dated for 5 years…..off, on, off, on and then we had a son together, I did EVERYTHING I could to keep us together, but he just would not commit to me….in the end I ended up marrying someone else, but his name is not John, it’s Sean.

heard it on a local station here in Jamaica on what they used to call the Country & Western Train.

Over the years, the song has always echoed in my head … and tonight at 1:44 in the morning, i decided to search it … I found it! Precious memories.

  28. I was very excited to find this song. My 20 year old daughter came over and sang the first couple lines and asked me how the rest of it went. I don’t know why she started thinking about it, cause I used to sing it to my kids when they were little. Pretty soon, they learned it, and we used to sing it all the time.
Of course, I couldn’t remember, so I googled it and there it was. I can’t wait until she gets home from work, so I can show her the whole song.
I willprobably be coming back to look up more songs; I used to teach thema whole bunch.
    Thank you so much!

  39. I’m from a small island in the middle of the pacific ocean. As a kid my mother used to hum this song to calm me to sleep. When I was in 3rd grade my american teacher heard me humming the tune and wrote the actual lyrics to me on a piece of paper in class. Than she sang to the class the song. I was in 3rd grade, never even had thought of girls yet but that was when my heart was first broken. I’m almost 34 now. I’ve not heard this song for more than 20 years but the song is still singing in my heart. My wife couldn’t sleep lastnight and so I was gently caressing her back to calm her down when I started humming this song. She woke up this morning asking me to play the song for her but I didn’t know it’s title. The words I remembered most were ‘Jimmy Jimmy please don’t cry’ and I google those words and that’s how I found this forum. Glad to know many more people cherish this song as me. Brings back precious timless memories. Thank you for helping find the song title.

  82. After reading all of the posts, I felt that I just HAD to share my story. First off, I grew up listening to this song…….nevermind the fact that I was named after Joni Lee and “Don’t Cry Joni” =) Needless to say, my mother was a huge Conway Twitty fan and when I was born in 1981, I was named after Conway Twitty’s (Harold Lloyd Jenkins) daughter, Joni Lee. The ironic part is that I never got to see him (or them) in concert. Conway died after a concert in Branson Missouri in 1993 – only a short 4 years before I moved there. Anyways, if anyone wants this song, I always have a copy of the album it’s on in one form or another and am more than willing to share it….just email me at joarme2587@yahoo.com and I will share =-)

I had the microphone in my hands held tight and belted out that tune to my Jimmy where ever he was. At the end of the song, all the boys at school kept asking if they could be my Jimmy. I am still look for my Jimmy πŸ™‚ I totally love that song
